Jaap van den Breukel: My North

In his photo book "My North," photographer Jaap van den Beukel sketches a picture of life in the Amsterdam neighborhood of Tuindorp Nieuwendam. For this project he approached more than a hundred residents of the neighborhood, of whom he eventually portrayed more than 75 in their own living environment. "The stories of these residents inspired me enormously, and their openness and hospitality touched me deeply," he says. Although at first glance Tuindorp Nieuwendam seems to hold on to its past, changes in the neighborhood - such as the transition from social rented to owner-occupied housing - are bringing about a subtle transformation. Traditional residents are slowly making way for a younger generation.

Van den Beukel became increasingly involved in the neighborhood through the conversations he had, the distinctive architecture and the street scene full of mobility scooters, Cantas, tricycles and countless pets. "That's how I discovered my own connection to this special neighborhood," he says.

Last summer, his outdoor exhibition toured various parts of Amsterdam. Now the project has also been captured in book form, which includes not only the impressive photography but also the stories behind the encounters with local residents. A web documentary, found on Mijnnoord.nl, offers even more insight into this unique project.
