The coffee table book 'Dennis Morris: Music + Life' is the great retrospective of one of the best photographers of all time of both music and black culture. Morris' adventures in the reggae and punk scene of the 1970s laid the foundation for a career spanning six decades.
It all started with Bob Marley: Morris stepped in with Marley in his early teens while playing hooky and captured much of Marley's tour, beginning his career as a music photographer. He later became the Sex Pistols' official photographer, and for John Lydon's next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was not only art director and designer, but also captured iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, and befriended many of the acts.
Morris' documentary and street photography, rooted in his experiences as a black teenager in 1970s Britain, brings us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the mining strike to squatter protests, civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera.
