Artist group CoBrA was the most important international avant-garde movement after World War II. The group consisting of Dutchmen Karel Appel, Constant and Corneille, Belgian Pierre Alechinsky, Danes Asger Jorn and Carl-Henning Pedersen and Swede Uno Vallman began their evening on Nov. 8, 1948, at the Café Notre-Dame in Paris.

With French as the language of communication, CoBrA, an acronym for the capitals of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam where the artists came from, was just about the last truly European movement within Modernism. The group's anarchist story is not only an important part of art history - it remains vivid and has inspired all kinds of artists who were never directly involved with Cobra. The work left to us is as fascinating as ever, both raw and confrontational, poetic and moving. It is with the same spirit of artistic joy and freedom that this coffee table book showcases the masterpieces of Cobra art.

Some of the painting members of CoBrA gained great international fame. The working methods and social ideas of this group would continue to develop after 1951 and have long after-effects in many European countries.
