Marcel Wanders
Marcel Wanders (Boxtel, 1963) is considered one of today's leading designers. He is internationally known for his furniture, interiors and idiosyncratic art direction.
Marcel Wanders graduated from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (now ArtEZ) in Arnhem in 1988. In 1996, he made his international breakthrough with the Knotted Chair, a miracle of transparency combining high-tech material with a low-tech macramé technique. Marcel Wanders was initially associated primarily with the avant-garde, conceptual direction of Dutch Design, which gained international furor mainly through the activities of the platform Droog Design. However, Wanders soon found a connection with industry, particularly abroad. From then on, his designs were for sale worldwide.
Marcel Wanders is a creative and innovative designer driven from the beginning of his career by a clear and distinctive vision: using design to create an extraordinary and sustainable environment. This sustainability is achieved by allowing users to build a bond with products, so that they will not easily discard them. To this end, Wanders exploits his talent as a communicator - he manages to communicate the stories he wants to tell not only through his designs, but also through the media.
Since 1999, Wanders has also focused on interior projects, such as the VIP room of the Dutch pavilion at the World Expo in Hannover (2000), the Mondrian Hotel in Miami (2008), Villa Moda in Bahrain (2008) and the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht Hotel (2012). He also works as an art director. Since 2001, he has held that position at Moooi, the successful interior design label, of which he is co-founder. For Moooi's striking publicity photos - often taken with Erwin Olaf - Wanders provides art direction.
