The coffee table book "The Face Magazine: Culture Shift" celebrates iconic fashion images and portraits from The Face, the iconic magazine on youth culture and style that shaped the creative and cultural landscape in Britain and beyond.
From 1980 to 2004, The Face played an important role in creating contemporary culture. Musicians featured on its covers achieved worldwide success, and the models the magazine promoted - including a young Kate Moss - became the most recognizable faces of their time. The magazine also launched the careers of many leading photographers and fashion stylists, who were given the creative freedom to radically innovate the visual language of fashion photography and define the zeitgeist. Relaunched in 2019, the magazine continues to provide a disruptive and creative space for image-makers by promoting new talent in photography, fashion, music and graphic design.
The photo book "The Face Magazine: Culture Shift" brings together the work of more than 80 photographers, including Sheila Rock, Stéphane Sednaoui, Corinne Day, David Sims, Elaine Constantine and Sølve Sundsbø, and showcases more than 200 photographs, a stunning collection in book form.
The photo book, "The Face Magazine: Culture Shift," was compiled by Sabina Jaskot-Gill, Senior Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, along with Curatorial Consultants Lee Swillingham, former Art Director of The Face from 1992 to 1999, and Norbert Schoerner, a photographer whose work appeared in the magazine in the 1990s and '90s.
