Rembrandt's remarkable portraits of his native Amsterdam reflect the light and shade of the city. The book "Rembrandt's Amsterdam" presents a stunning collection of artworks that the old master painted during his time in Amsterdam.

In the seventeenth century, Amsterdam became one of the most important economic centers in Europe. The city and its population grew rapidly while trade and the arts flourished as well. The influential bourgeoisie shaped the fortunes of the city and confidently celebrated themselves in magnificent group portraits of the city's leading artists, most notably Rembrandt.

More than in any other city, the group portrait in Amsterdam developed as a mirror of a powerful social elite, especially the members of the archers' guilds and the regents of social institutions. Their good fortune had its price, however, for the roots of the city's Golden Age lay in a colonialist trade policy and a rigid social order. Rembrandt's Amsterdam shows both sides of the coin with images and stories of a pluralistic society that tell of wealth and inequality, happiness and downfall, and power and powerlessness.
