Superhero teams had existed since the 1940s, but Thor, Ant Man, the Wasp, the Hulk and Iron Man broke new ground when they joined forces in 1963 and formed the Avengers. Not only did they fight together, they occasionally fought each other! The first 20 stories of the Avengers are collected in this Hulk-sized volume and carefully photographed from the most pristine copies of these rare comic books.

By early 1963, the foundations of the Marvel Universe had been laid. After the introduction of the Fantastic Four in 1961 came the amazing Spider-Man, the amazing Ant-Man, the strange Doctor, the incredible Hulk, the invincible Iron Man and the mighty Thor. Yet Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee realized something was missing. "I was writing these characters and I thought it would be fun to bring them together as a team," he recalled. So Lee and illustrator Jack Kirby gathered Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor and the Hulk to create the Avengers.

Relive the classic early adventures of Avengers Nos. 1-20 in an XXL edition that is bigger than the Hulk's fist, heavier than Thor's hammer and with more extras than Iron Man's armor.

For the coffee table book 'Marvel Comics Library. Avengers. Vol. 1. 1963-1965' publisher Taschen tried to create an ideal reproduction of these books as they were produced at the time of publication. Working closely with Marvel, the coolest comics were cracked open and photographed for reproduction. Each page was then digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the cheap, imperfect printing of the era - as if they had just come off a world-class printing press from the 1960s.
